An exploration of the fascinating and innovative chamber concertos Vivaldi wrote for the girls of the Pietà, the Venetian orphanage he taught at from 1703. Some of them excelled on the Baroque oboe and recorder, recently introduced to Italy, and the concertos feature virtuoso solos for these instruments accompanied by varied combinations of violins and continuo. As a contrast there is sparkling oboe sonata in the form of a dance suite and Vivaldi’s dashing setting of La Folia, inspired by Corelli. The tutors of the CEM Baroque Summer School, joined by the leading Japanese violinist Asuka Sumi, play this exciting music with rare conviction and authority.
