Benjamin Britten’s classic A Ceremony of Carols is paired with a semi-staged performance of the lesser known one-act opera Amahl and the Night Visitors – the first ever written for television – by Gian Carlo Menotti.
In his native Italy, the role of Santa Claus is taken by the Three Kings who bring gifts to the children. His childhood love of these characters is the basis for his inspiration, and the opera has become his best-known work.
