The Endellion String Quartet is renowned as one of the finest quartets in the world. It was founded in January 1979 and three of the original players continue to be members. Ralph de Souza joined them thirty-two years ago in 1986. In 2013, Gramophone stated 'There’s always a feeling when listening to the Endellion Quartet that you’re listening to the Urtext method of quartet playing. Maybe 35 years of playing together has brought to them as a group a uniformity of thought and instinct that allows them to play as a single entity.'
The 2018-2019 season is the Endellion’s fortieth since their first rehearsal on 20 January 1979. They have been ‘Resident Quartet’ of Cambridge University for well over half of these years. This year’s programmes contain a mixture of some of the first pieces which the Endellions learned together with new pieces especially commissioned for their 40th Anniversary.
HAYDN String Quartet in A major Op.20 No.6
KISSIN String Quartet (U.K. Première)
BEETHOVEN String Quartet in B flat major Op.130 (with the Grosse Fuge as the Finale)
The delightful Haydn Op 20. No.6 ends in a delicate, very playful fugue; the great late Beethoven quartet ends with the mighty, ever contemporary Grosse Fuge — a Titan amongst fugues. In between comes the first quartet composed by the great Russian pianist Evgeny Kissin.
