No. 3 in D minor BWV 527
No. 6 in G major BWV 530

This concert of Bach trio sonatas for organ presents these famous works as never heard before – arranged for two harpsichords by one of the performers, baroque organ expert David Ponsford. He is joined by Festival Director David Hill, himself a highly-respected organist and conductor.

David Ponsford explains: “My justification for arranging these sonatas for two harpsichords comes from the preface to François Couperin’s L’Apothéose de Lully (1725), in which he states that trios can be played on two harpsichords with both players playing the bass part with their left hands, and with the upper parts being played by their right hands. Couperin says that he often played them thus with his family and his pupils. As an experiment, I have arranged Bach’s organ trios in the same manner, and have discovered a completely new character to these sonatas which I have played on the organ and loved for many years.”
