Last year’s Festival finished on a glorious high with an acclaimed performance of Bach’s B minor Mass. This year, the same superb musicians return to open the 2019 Festival with the profound and powerful St John Passion, joined by an exceptional cast of soloists including Nicholas Mulroy as the Evangelist and Richard Latham as Christ. Bach set the story of Christ’s arrest, trial and crucifixion twice, and this earlier setting is perhaps less familiar than the famous St Matthew version. Whether you’re new to the music or not, tonight’s performance promises to be intense, dramatic and revelatory.
English Voices has an outstanding reputation as a vocal ensemble. Founder and conductor Tim Brown’s precision and passion are mirrored by the choir’s talented singers – all aspiring young soloists who love singing together. The English Voices Baroque Orchestra, which was formed for last year’s Festival, comprises leading exponents of baroque music who share the choir’s commitment to historically-informed performance techniques.
