Cambridge Summer Music Pre-Festival Event
Lord Smith: The State of the Arts
Monday 2 July, 6.00pm
Old Library, Pembroke College

Chris Smith, former Culture Secretary, who was made a Life Peer in 2005, will reflect on the past twenty years of Arts achievement and policy in Britain – and on where we are now, still to a certain extent living off the legacy of a golden age, but with major challenges and issues confronting us. He will argue for the overwhelming importance of the Arts in society, both for intrinsic and for practical reasons, and will lament their neglect by contemporary politics and policy.
