First presented to celebrate their own 40th anniversary, the Brodsky Quartet’s adventurous concert format produces a different programme of four quartets every time. Throughout the evening the wheel is spun to select works from 24 of their favourites. The possibilities are delicious, but you won’t know what you’re going to hear until the wheel comes to a halt.
Tonight’s choices will be picked from the works below – one from each of the four groups:
1st spin. Purcell Chaconne; Mozart Adagio & Fugue; Bach The Art of Fugue I & VI; Schubert Quartettsatz; Turina Bullfighter’s Prayer; Wolf Italian Serenade
2nd spin. Beethoven String Quartet in F minor, Op.95; Britten String Quartet No.3, Op. 94; Janacek Quartet No.2 ‘Intimate Letters’; Shostakovich Quartet No. 8 in C minor, Op.110; Borodin String Quartet No.2 in D, ‘Kismet’; Elgar String Quartet in E minor, Op.83
3rd spin. Alvarez Metro Chabacano; Szymański Four Pieces for String Quartet; Tanaka At the Grave of Beethoven; Jegede Quartet No.2; Kraggerud Preghiera; Brodsky Surprise!
4th spin. Bartok String Quartet No.1; Ravel String Quartet in F; Mendelssohn String Quartet No. 6, Op.80; Shostakovich Quartet No. 5 in B flat major, Op.92; Beethoven String Quartet, Op.132; Dvořák String Quartet Op.96 ‘American’
“…the players gave unstintingly of their passion and energies, playing with a spirit so transformational you felt they were actually improving the world.”
