A discussion of The Short Story, curated by Daisy Johnson

Daisy Johnson, Thomas de Freston, Sarvat Hasin and Kiran Millwood Hargrave

The Husband Stitch is a retelling of an American folktale called The Red Ribbon in which a woman wears a ribbon around her neck which no one, not even her husband, is allowed to touch. A story exploring boundaries, motherhood, secrets and seduction.

Daisy Johnson, Thomas de Freston, Sarvat Hasin, and Kiran Millwood Hargrave will be discussing the short story, with extracts read out. An event modelled on The New Yorker’s Podcast series in which an author reads a story by another writer they admire and then discusses what they like about the work. Using the short story as a jumping off point these artists will discuss the themes and images which occupy it, why this particular short story has gained so much interest. We will also be discussing the space of the short story itself and how it is a fruitful area for haunting, uncanny fiction.
