Recitals given by Dame Sarah Connolly are red-letter days. At Pembroke College she offers a typically wide-ranging recital that includes music which she has very much made her own. With a career that has been as distinguished on the operatic stage as on the recital platform, she is firmly established as one of the finest artists of our time. The much-loved mezzo soprano was recently made an honorary member of the Royal Philharmonic Society in recognition to her outstanding services to music. She is joined for this Cambridge recital by regular duo-partner and Pembroke’s College Musician, Joseph Middleton, who has also been lauded by the RPS, being the first accompanist to win their Young Artist Award. The duo have appeared together in the world’s finest music centres, across Europe and North America, with The New York Times describing a recital by Connolly and Middleton at the Lincoln Centre as ‘superlative...everything a recital should be.’ At the BBC Proms they gave the world premieres of recently discovered songs by Benjamin Britten and subsequently recorded them for a much-lauded CD on the Chandos label. They have both appeared as Featured Artists at London’s Wigmore Hall and the Concertgebouw Amsterdam. Recent performances by Connolly have seen her appear as Fricka at the Royal Opera House. She returns to the Metropolitan Opera New York next season. Middleton airs his third week-long series of lunchtime concerts on BBC Radio 3 this spring, looks forward to multiple appearances at Wigmore Hall, at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the Schubertiade Hohenems, in Japan and Baden Baden. This year his CD releases have won him a Diapason d’or (France), Edison Award (Holland), Prix Caecilia (Belgium) and the American Record Guide described him as “the best collaborative pianist of his generation.”
