Live Transmission: A stunning musical and visual interpretation of the works of Joy Division with the Heritage Orchestra featuring Scanner. This event marked the first step in a new direction for the Corn Exchange programme and paved the way for our new cornex:discover brand.
As part of this event we worked in partnership with Cambridge University Music and Education Outreach to present a unique to Cambridgeshire students aged 16+. Students were invited to the Corn Exchange to participate in a preshow workshop which explored themes giving an insight to the history of Joy Division, the interpretation of the music and the practical issues of staging an event of this nature. The talk featured an exclusive Q&A session with members of the Heritage Orchestra and the students were given an allocation of free and discounted tickets to the show.

Live Drawing: Cambridge Drawing Society Sketches EUCO, April 2013
In the middle of Cambridge Drawing Societies annual exhibition, Cambridge Corn Exchange offered members of the society a unique opportunity to sit in on visiting orchestra EUCO rehearsal and sketch the musicians –live music, live drawing!
The project was further enhanced with a pre-concert talk by Julian Lloyd Webber which took place in the same venue as the exhibition and therefore shared audiences.
Royal Philharmonic Orchestra – composing project
Cambridge Corn Exchange and Orchestras Live teamed up to present this opportunity. The fantastic RPO education team were commissioned to work with young people from Cambridge based youth club Newton Q to compose and perform a 9 minute piece of music. Some of these young people had never picked up an instrument before and found talents they didn’t know they had! The project relied upon the dedication of the young people and their families and the expertise of the RPO and support of the Children and Young Peoples Participation Service. The result was a Cambridge Corn Exchange live performance by the young people backed by RPO musicians in front of an audience of 1000. This project sought to inspire young people to tune into classical music in a new way andencourage confidence.

Our venue offers a really exciting opportunity for these young performers to play on a professional stage in front of a live audience. Cambridge Corn Exchange, Cambridgeshire Music and the RPO have and continue to collaborate on the presentation of the County Youth ensemble concerts featuring some bright young stars of tomorrow. Thursday 30th January 7.30pm – RPO American programme

20 musicians and 15 dancers from three secondary schools will work together over 3 days exploring their reactions and responses to the jazz influenced classical music in the concert programme.

Tutors from Cambridgeshire Music and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra will work with the students to create an original music/dance work.

A Jazz Dance Film will be created to showcase the work. This will be streamed to the audiences smart phones, tablets and laptops in the interval of the concert.

The students will attend the evening performance.
Thursday 13th March 7.30 – RPO Beethoven programme

30 young string players will work with RPO tutors to create a new piece of music influenced by the Beethoven programme.

The new piece will be professionally arranged and then returned to the students for final rehearsals.

The students will perform the piece alongside the RPO string section at the start of the performance on 13th March.
Thursday 22nd May 7.30 – RPO English programme

As part of Julian Lloyd Webber’s final concert as Artist in Residence at the Corn Exchange a group of talented young cellists will work with Julian and RPO tutors to learn Heitor Villa Lobos’s Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5.

This work links with the wordless vocal element in the Vaughan Williams piece at the concert that evening and will feature soprano Lucy Hall.

The piece will be performed by the students at the beginning of the concert.
